The TAG: Tight-Aggressive Poker Player
You play few hands and bet the ones you play. It's the style most poker teaching aims for, and the next edge is adjusting to the players at your table.
Signs you play this way
- You fold most of what you’re dealt, especially from the early seats.
- When you play a hand, you usually come in with a raise rather than a limp (just calling the big blind).
- You bet your strong hands instead of checking and hoping your opponent bets for you.
- A bad beat stings, and you still play the next hand the same way.
What it gets right
Playing tight keeps you out of marginal spots, the hands that look playable and lose a little every time. Betting your strong hands builds the pots you’re most likely to win. Together, that’s why tight-aggressive is the style most poker teaching aims for.
Where it leaves chips
A solid default is still a default. Played the same way against everyone, it leaves chips with the players who need a different answer. You bluff the player who never folds. You pay off the quiet player who only bets with a strong hand. You leave the blinds alone against the player who folds too often, when you could be taking them.
A hand that shows it
You hold top pair with a good kicker in two hands tonight. In the first, the player who has called every bet all night checks the river to you. In the second, the player who has folded for an hour suddenly raises your turn bet.
A default line treats the two hands alike. The read splits them. The first player calls with second pair, so bet the river for value, because checking it back wins nothing extra. The second player only raises with a hand that beats yours, so folding costs you the turn bet and keeps the rest of your stack. Same cards, opposite answers, and the difference is who you’re playing.
The next edge is reading the table: sorting opponents by how many hands they play and what they do with them, then adjusting to each one. That’s Skill 9.
The skill that helps most
Skill 9: Opponent Types
Categorize players by how they play, not what they say. Four player types, four adjustment strategies.
In the app, the Skill 9 drill deals you the spot, you pick an action, and it grades your choice with the reason before the next hand. Skill 9 is part of the subscription, which starts with a 7-day free trial.
The other player types
- The LAG (loose-aggressive)
- The Rock (tight-passive)
- The Calling Station (loose-passive)
- The Steamer (tilt-prone)
