The Steamer: Tilt-Prone Poker Player
You play your game until a bad beat, then you play a different one. In poker slang that's steaming: playing on tilt.
Signs you play this way
- After a big loss, you play hands you’d have folded an hour earlier.
- When you’re down for the night, you push harder to get even.
- A bad beat stays with you for the rest of the session.
- Your best and worst nights look like two different players.
- The morning after, you can name the hands you shouldn’t have played.
What it gets right
Tilt doesn’t erase what you know. The hands you fold at the start of the night are still folds after a bad beat. The skill is already there, and the work is keeping it for the whole session.
A hand that shows it
Early in the night you fold Q-6 offsuit from early position without a second thought. Two hours later you lose a big pot when your opponent hits one of the two cards left in the deck that beat you. Three hands after that, you’re in early position with Q-6 offsuit again, the same seat and the same cards, and this time you call a raise with it, because you want to win something back.
Nothing about Q-6 offsuit changed between those two hands. The call loses chips before the flop is dealt, and when a queen does come, it often costs more, because the player who raised tends to hold a better queen. The bad beat cost you one pot. The hands you play after it can cost several more.
Where it costs you
Tilt usually shows up first in your starting hands. The range you open when you’re even gets wider when you’re stuck, and the extra hands are the ones that lose. A set of opening hands you trust, because you’ve drilled them, doesn’t change after a bad river. Play the decision, not the result.
Knowing which hands to open from each seat is Skill 1. The mental game guides cover the rest of tilt.
The skill that helps most
Skill 1: Opening Hands
Which hands are profitable to open-raise, and from where. Tighter early, wider late, with pattern recognition over memorization.
In the app, the Skill 1 drill deals you the spot, you pick an action, and it grades your choice with the reason before the next hand. Skill 1 is free.
The other player types
