The Rock: Tight-Passive Poker Player
You wait for good hands, then play them quietly. The discipline is real, and the chips you leave behind are in the bets you don't make.
Many players call this style a nit, and the player types guide uses that name.
Signs you play this way
- You fold most hands and rarely get out of line.
- With a strong hand, you often check so you don’t scare anyone off.
- You limp (just call the big blind) more often than you raise.
- Facing a bet with a draw, you tend to fold or call, and rarely raise.
What it gets right
You don’t bleed chips on weak hands. Folding junk from the early seats is the first discipline most players have to learn, and you already have it. You also rarely lose a big pot with a weak hand, because you’re rarely in one.
Where it costs you
A strong hand that checks wins a small pot. When you check top pair, your opponent often checks behind with a hand that would have called a bet, and the chips you could have won stay in their stack.
A hand that shows it
You raise with A-K from the cutoff and the button calls. The flop is K-8-3 with two hearts. You have top pair with the best kicker, and you check so you don’t scare the button off. The button checks behind. The turn is a 2. You check again, and so does the button. On the river you finally bet, and the button folds.
Three streets went by and the pot never grew. The button might have held K-J, or 8-7 of hearts, or a small pocket pair, and each of those hands would have called at least one bet along the way. Betting the flop and the turn with the best hand is how a small pot becomes a big one.
Your bets also give you away. If you only bet with a big hand, the table learns to fold when you bet and to keep betting when you check. Betting your good hands, at a size the other player will call, fixes both. That’s Skill 8.
